Introducing the Third Generation Waterman:

Kainalu Froiseth.

Personal Background:

I am 21 years old and was born and raised in Makaha, Hawaii. I started surfing when I was just 4 years old at my favorite spot, Makaha Beach. I am the third generation of a surfing family, my grandfather is pioneer big wave surfer Wally Froiseth and I want to be a true waterman like him. I am on my way to this goal by being able to charge big or small waves, steer a 4-man canoe into 8-10 foot Makaha Point surf, surf beach boy style ( paddle-surfing), tow into outer reef breaks, pull off 360’s on a traditional Hawaiian paipo board, run rocks under 10 feet of water and fishing and diving for dinner. My dad, Teene is also a big wave surfer and lifeguard captain for the City & County of Honolulu responsible for the Leeward district of Oahu. My mom, Brooke & little brother, Kamakani also surf.

 Life Influences:

The people who have influenced me most are my mom & dad because they always supported and encouraged me in everything I did. Rusty Keaulana has encouraged me since I was a little kid, and he rips. Rell Sunn gave me advice on my style and was always full of aloha. My best friends Makamae Desoto & Jericho Leedy also inspire me because we are competitive with each other and are inspired to push ourselves to higher limits. And last but not least all of the children that I worked with through Surfer’s Healing were a major inspiration, because the sheer joy I saw in their face reminds me how awesome surfing is.

 Favorite Surf Spots:

 Makaha, Yokohamas, 3rd Dip, Keaau’s

 Goal & Biggest Accomplishments:

As far as accomplishments; finishing 4th in the Menehune division of the USSF (2001), getting 2nd in team surfing in Buffalo Keaulana’s Big Board Contest in 8-10 ft surf( especially rewarding when the only team that beat us were Lance Hookano/ Zane Aikau also steering my canoe surfing crew ( all under 18 ) to the semi-finals that same year, and scoring the only perfect 10 for canoe surfing in the 2005 Quiksilver Makahiki in 10 foot Makaha Pt surf and winning the 19 & under division of the 32nd annual Haleiwa International Open held in 10-12 foot surf.

This past summer I worked with the Paskowitz Surf camps in San Diego and became one of their lead instructors. I was also very involved in and inspired by Surfer’s Healing, an organization that works with autistic children by allowing them to experience surfing. I was also able to participate in a surf camp in Long Beach, New York and even met Mayor Bloomberg. I plan to return to California in the spring of 2006 and will again be a lead instructor. I begin filming an upcoming reality series based in California in November. It is based around building “hot curl” surfboards and the surfing lifestyle of a small group of 2nd & 3rd generation surfers with famous surfing fathers or grandfathers.

I am also currently working with Dan Hurlihey on a National Geographic documentary about “Hot Curl” surfboards and the evolution of surfing.
